Jiří Ježek

Jiří Ježek is one of the most successful disabled riders, a specialist in road events and track events. Participated in the Sydney 2000 Paralympics Games, in Athens 2004 and Beijing 2008; which always brought the gold medal. This multiple winner Paralympic and world champion is capable of giving problemsto healthy runners.

Biography:

He lost a leg below the knee at age eleven in a car accident. At twenty opted for cycling, first in their free time later this sport influenced his life. After 5 years of hard training came in the top category among the disabled, when in 2000 he won two gold medals at the Paralympics Games in Sydney.

Continued training and tried to climb the professional level, which ultimately allowed their sponsors in 2004, when he left his job forever and prosthetic started in the business of cycling. In the same year won the prestigious competition en route to the Paralympics in Athens. Gains each year since the titles of champion and defeats his rivals in the competition field. Paralympics Games in Beijing in 2008 brought two gold medals, the persecution of 4 km and the trial singles.

In addition to the Paralympics cycling competes successfully with professionals "healthy” throughout the world. So not only represents himself and the Czech Republic, but especially to all disabled people alike.

Jiří Ježek each year runs between 27 and 30 thousand miles and is involved in between 55 and 57 competitions worldwide.

Disabled athletes

Andrés Boira

At 18, Andrés Boira has proven to be a born athlete. He began his forey into sports in the world of athletics, cycling and tested and with 12 years being discovered sport start in his life: skying.
'' I love the snow, you´re in touch with nature and the sensation of feeling the wind in your face,frankly, i like a lot, he exclaims.
Andrés says he is ready, but not with the nerves, ''because until you´re here you don`t believe.''. Although it is really difficult, daily workouts three or four hours to help you forget about the great sports event.
Despite his youth and his nerves could be mistaken for a rookie, already a veteran in the field of competition. Andrés has been competing in the World Championships (2003-2004) and the European Cup in the last three years, improving its results as he won experience.
The sport has been a catalyst in the life of a young skier, who after enduring humiliation at school for being vissually impaired and spend much time at home for lack of friends, found in skiing a great way to interact and make the best of itself. ''I´d advise everyone, sports can help a lot, especially if you are disabled and young'', he explains without a trace of bitterness after the experiences have suffered.
Now their main concerns is to do well in Turin. To meet this objective has the unconditional support of Beatriz Arcederillo: his guide. Andrés Boira has nothing but praise for his fellow-sufferers: ''we got along fine, we talked a lot and i trust her, that`s what it´s to keep improving''.
From March 10 the goal is ''to do my best and won experience for the Vancouver Games'' in 2010.

Disabled people: Steve Cook

Steve Cook, a BK amputee, is a four-time Paralympian, and won three medals at the 2006 Winter Games in Torinoo including, a gold in men´s 5km freestyle; gold in men´s 10k classic; and bronze in men´s 20km classic. He began cross-country skiing in 1995, and has an impressive list of accomplishments including: 2005 International Paralympic Committe (IPC) Nordic Skiing World Champion (10k and 20k); 2005 World Cup Champion in cross-country; 2002 Paralympic Winter Games four-time silver medalist; and 2003 IPC Nordic Skiing World Championship bronze medalist. He also is an avid cyclist, and joined fellow Paralympic teammates in the Escape from Alcatraz triathlon, beating the entire field of able-bodied relay teams. When he is not skiing,biking, or fishing, Steve manages the service department of Contender Bicycles in Salt Lake City.

Disabled Sportmen

George L. Eyser was born on August 31, 1871 in Kiel, Germany. When he was 14, his family immigrated to the United States. They moved to St. Louis, Missouri where Eyser worked as a bookkeeper at a construction factory. There, he joined a local gymnastics club Concordia Turnverein Saint Louis. In 1894 Eyser obtained US citizenship. He lost most of his left leg, which had to be amputated after a train ran over it. It was replaced by a wooden prosthesis which allowed physical activities such as running and jumping. A keen sportsman, Eyser pursued training for the 1904 Olympics. There were two sets of gymnastic events: International Turners Championship and Olympic Gymnastics Championships.

Eyser competed in both sets and did poorly in the first one. He was the 71st in another gymnastic all-around event. He also competed in the athletics triathlon, but finished the last. He performed much better in the second competition set. He won six medals in total, of which three were gold, two silver, and one bronze.

Prior to 2008, Eyser was the only person with an artificial leg to have competed at the Olympic Games.

He participated in the Paralympics in Sydney in 2000, in Athens in 2004 and in Beijing in 2008, where he always got the gold medal. This Paralympic champion could even be a hard opponent for non-disabled cyclists.

Jiří Ježek was born in Prague (Czech Republic) on the 16th of October of 1974. After a car accident in 1985 (when he was 11 years old), he had to have his right leg amputated below the knee. However, the missing leg didn't stop him from becaming a cyclist. When he was twenty, he began his career as a cyclist, at first in his free time, and later this sport influenced all his life. After five years of hard training, he reached the summit in his category among the disabled sportsmen, when in 2000, he got two gold medals at the Paralympics in Sydney.

Next, he tried to become a professional, which the sponsors finally allowed. In this same year, he has won the route competition in the Paralympics in Athens. Since them, he has won every championship, and he has defeated all his opponents. At the Paralympics in Beijing in 2008, he won two gold medals (4 km pursuit and individual time trial).

The strangest thing, is that besides the Paralympic cycling, he competes successfully with non-disabled professionals all around the world. So, he doesn't represent only himself and the Czech Republic, but all disabled people.

Every year, he rides between 27 and 30 thousand km and he participates between 55 and 57 competitions all around the world.
These are his achievements:

• 2000: champion of 1 km to the fixed point of departure, champion of 4 km pursuit (Paralympics in Sydney).

• 2004: champion of the combination route competition and the individual time trial, and runner-up in 4 km pursuit (Paralympics in Athens).

• 2008: champion of 4 km pursuit, runner-up in 1 km to the fixed point of departure and third in team sprint (Paralympics in Beijing).
